Kitchen Tip Tuesday: Eggs

After all our years of raising chickens and using their eggs in the kitchen I stumbled upon this little nugget of wisdom!




Crack the egg on a flat surface (not the rim of a bowl) to crack the shell easier and reduce the amount of shells that fall in the bowl.  

Who'da thunk?

Many years ago I read that you can teach your kids to crack an egg by drawing a simple face on it (eyes, nose, mouth) and then telling them to break the egg's nose. I don't know if it works for all kids, but my kids (who were pretty young at the time) cracked eggs like pros- one whack and no mess- almost every time.

I'm going to try this tomorrow when i make corn casserole, lol!!!! I just discovered a couple of months ago that if you put a boiled egg into ice cold water right after you cook it, it helps with the peeling. Tried it and it really works lol!!!

The ice is a great way to peel those eggs! And when the ice melts add more! Happy cooking!

That is exactly what I have taught my kids. How many chickens do you have? What kinds?

We have 13 laying hens (Barred Rock and Silver Laced Wyandottes) right now and 45 birds (pullets and cockerels)(Buff Orpingtons) we're raising for meat. Before we butcher 40 of them we'll put the best 5 hens in with the other layers. : )
